The annual block party is hosted in May to recognize Mental Health Awareness month. Cirrus House focuses on providing quality of life and independence for people living with mental illness in the Nebraska Panhandle through opportunities for advocacy, housing, employment, education and a peer-supported community where members can find belonging and purpose.

They have been working on another project with the West Nebraska Arts Center (WNAC)m called “SELFIES, The Faces of Mental Health,” which will be a photography exhibit.

The goal of the “Faces of Mental Health” photography exhibit is to bring public awareness to the stigma of mental illness through art. Many people have a preconceived notion of what mental illness looks like, and this exhibit seeks to challenge that perception.

“They (WNAC) have been extraordinarily helpful. They even helped us come up with the medium for the project,” Samuel Crouch with the Cirrus House said. “It’s kind of a give back almost to our youth because they are not being charged at all to participate and they’re actually going to receive their photos.”

“SELFIES” is a group, non-juried exhibit open to all photographic styles, processes and techniques. It is open to all artists, ages 16 to 24 years old. Artists may enter up to 2 photographs in pdf format and email to scrouch@cirrushouse.com or must be able to deliver their artwork and completed entry forms to the Cirrus House on or before June 10, 2016 by 4 p.m. Cirrus House will choose one of the two entries to enter in the SELFIES exhibit.

The exhibit will be in the Bronson Gallery at the Art Center July 7 through Aug 28. There will be an opening reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on July 7 and a wrap-up party Aug. 25 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Arts Center hours are Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.
